Dr Carole Casteen has been a practicing ophthalmologist (Eye MD) for the past 27 years, in Bakersfield, California. She is experienced at diagnosing and treating general eye disease including dry eyes, corneal disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal tears/ retinal detachment. She is available for second opinions. She spent three years of training above and beyond the usual ophthalmology training, in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina, which gives her extra training in the diagnosis of retinal disorders. She is available for emergency exams after hours and weekends by calling her at 661-978-8065.
Dr Casteen was trained by her father, Dr. William F Casteen, to do refractions which are eyeglasses exams. She guarantees her eyeglasses prescriptions for accuracy. Many ophthalmology offices have an optometrist or even an assistant perform these exams. Dr. Casteen believes that an accurate refraction is part of excellent eyecare, and therefore she performs this part of the exam herself.
Dr Casteen has performed thousands of successful cataract surgeries over the past 27 years that she has been in private practice. She uses state of the art equipment, and operates at Physicians' Plaza Surgery Center with the assistance of experienced scrub techs and nurses. All patients receive an IOL (intraocular lens implant), and the power of the IOL is customized to fit each patient's eye in order to give the patient the best possible vision without correction.
Dr Casteen has years of experience performing diabetic eye exams to screen for diabetic retinopathy. She refers patients with treatable diabetic eye disease to Dr. Ivan Castillo of The Retina Institute on Stockdale Highway.
Dr Casteen has years of experience treating patients with glaucoma. She has a state of the art Humphrey Visual Field machine to test peripheral vision. Dr. Casteen's assistant, Melissa, is experienced at performing Visual Field exams, and is a great asset in Dr. Casteen's practice.
